The Dish on Dish: Jerome Bettis' Grille 36

Extsmall We try not to insult an icon

Photos by Frank Kownacki. Click for larger views.

The waitress, wearing the Grille 36 lady waitstaff uniform—a yellow tank top covered by a black tube top, which, let Dish assure you, is a combo flattering to no one—approached the table on the patio outside Jerome Bettis' new restaurant. She proudly told Mr. and Mrs. Dish and their Dining companions that the beer list featured 32 options, "Just like the number 32 Jerome wore."

This kind of error surpasses the inexcusable; and, perhaps, rises to the blasphemous. Not only regarding Bettis, but His heroic predecessor, Franco Harris.

In any event, this snafu was a harbinger of things to come.

BarblursmallSitting in the evening sun betwixt Heinz Field and PNC Park, Mr. and Mrs. Dish ordered draft beers to slake their thirst. They tasted as though something foul had fouled the tap lines. These beers were sent back.

Mrs. Dish ordered a bottle of Yuengeling. That turned out fine. Mr. Dish ordered an Iron City. Out came an I.C. Light, which was sent back. About 10 minutes later, the proper beer arrived. It was consumed. Another of its kind was ordered. Out came an I.C. Light. It was sent back. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Dinner was ordered. The Dishes and their dining chums were somewhat surprised to find that a side salad was not included in the price of a pasta dinner. Needing greens, Mr. Dish dropped another $3.95 on the foliage, as did Pregnant Lady Buddy of the Dishes. The salad, let it be said, was fine

Foodsmall

Entrees arrive. Mr. Dish's rigatoni with spicy sausage looked appealing. Sadly, the sauce was too sweet and too plentiful. 'Twas almost like pasta soup. A nice touch, though, were the whole spinach leaves interspersed in the sauce and pasta. The nice touch was ruined when Mr. Dish realized the kitchen had not been instructed to wash the leafy green before serving. Mr. Dish does not like his spinach gritty.

Impregnating Chum of Dish had a plain 'ol burger topped with cheese and a portabella mushroom cap. The burger was quality, though overdone by medium rare standards. No big deal, though, as ICoD was the first to join the clean plate club at the table of four.

Mrs. Dish had the ribs. An awful lot of ribs. When Mrs. Dish ordered, she was somewhat surprised that the waitress asked her how she wanted them done, assuming there was only one way to have them: Cooked. The sauce, sadly, couldn't be tasted, though the ribs themselves were juicy and meaty; which is just the way one wants one's juicy meat.

PLBoD enjoyed her macaroni and cheese. Though a bit on the cold side when it reached table side, the creamy/crunchiness was pleasing to the palate. Mr.Dish would comment more on PLBoD's dish, but he hates cheese and wouldn't really look at the stuff, let alone taste it.

Complaints aside, Grille 36 has redeeming qualities aplenty. The view and the outdoor seating area make the trip to the river's edge worthwhile. Also, it seems that at the most basic level the quality of the food is more than adequate, meaning that once the kitchen and waitstaff work the kinks out, the overall appeal of the victuals may approach the charm of the atmosphere.

For now, Grille 36 is a pleasant enough place with decent enough food. It can, and likely will, be better. But even if relative perfection is never approached, the retired Mr. Bettis can rely on the patronage of customers such as the guy in his 50s, clad in a replica Bettis jersey (expecting a discount, perhaps?), lounging in a chair on the patio lost in a reverie of number 36's glory days.

Went to Grille 36 last Friday night the 19th of Oct.. Had to wait about 20-30 minutes which isn't bad for a nice place like this on Friday night. The greeter was very pleasant and escorted us to a nice neat CLEAN table in corner. A very pretty waitress (who's name escapes me) greeted us with in 3-5 minutes of us sitting down. I had a BIG draft Porter and my wife had a margarita .. both came in 5 minutes...

Whom ever designed the restaurant did an outstanding job... It is truly one of the nicest sports based restaurants i have ever been to.. TV's every where, an outstanding sound system, the works... I am DEFINITELY checking out this place on a Sunday!!!

The menu had your standard american fare with a few twists. the prices looked to be about average to slightly below average for this nice of a place..

I already knew what I was after.. The 36 ounce steak... Which I promptly ordered when our waitress returned.. my wife ordered an Asian salad of some sort. The waitress warned us that the steak takes a litte longer .. We sat and enjoyed another drink or two and waited for our food..

our food arrived in around 20-25 minutes which was pretty quick considering the hunk of meat she brought me.. HAA!

My food was spectacular the Steak was cooked to perfection.. it was a super nice cut of meat that was every bit of 36 ounces before it was cooked.. I like the fact that is a bone in piece of meat... the flavor was unreal... This steak would have cost much more at Morten's or Ruth's and it was every bit as good as far as I am concerned.. I am embarrassed to say that I ate every bite...

My wife was very pleased with her salad.. she said it was the perfect size for her.. (although she did eat some of my steak) haahaa!! the ingredients where fresh and the dressing was out of this world..

The waitress checked back frequently but not frequently enough to be annoying she kept all of out liquid refreshments filled at all times..

The bill got there and for the quality of the food, the establishment, and the treatment we received it was a bargain..

I will be back... and I would recommend Grille 36 to anyone...

i felt it was time to leave some comments, being as though i have been to jbg36 four times. i have a waiter, and waitress who i enjoy. jake and toya they make my families ime there very enjoyable. the food never disappointed me or my family, every recommendation that toya suggested has been outstanding, they take time and tend to my family every time were there. and yes the uniforms are not the best but what does that have to do with the food and the service.......

I would like to share my recent experience at Jerome Bettis Grille 36.....I loved it! I arrived on Saturday night with 8 family members and friends to celebrate a birthday, the place was packed. We were quoted an hour and thirty minute wait....we love Jerome so we waited. After about 20 minutes a senior citizen in our group was having some breathing issues, a manager noticed this, got her a seat and some water and said he'd return.....5 minutes later he came back and informed us he was taking us to Jerome's private room to relax and have dinner. The room was beautiful, lovely couch, chairs and 4 TV's! Our older friend could sit comfortably and relax. The food was wonderful, the service was friendly and warm. After two hours of enjoyment two of the owners came in and asked how everything was, they stayed and joked with us and made us feel special. We were a group of mostly middle-aged African-American women, we love Jerome and are very proud of him. His restaurant made this birthday one of the best we've ever had. We knew no one there when we arrived, when we left we felt like family! Also, to the person who was appalled to see mayonaise on the table, well that was a problem 20 years ago! Go in your supermarket nowadays, there are alot of products that no longer need to be refrigerated.....including mayonaise!!! Thank you Jerome and your staff. Everything was wonderful and we will be back many times! Can we get your room again!!?? ; )

Well, I have, over time read all the comments here and found them to be a mixed bag. Some positives seemed to be positives because the person was a Jerome fan, some negatives were so negative they sounded like they came from a Browns fan or a local competitor who has lost customers! As a former restaurant executive I thought I'd wait a while to let them "shake" things out. For you novices, to do a restaurant review in the first 90-120 days of opening is just plain stupid! It's like a football team going from camp to the Super Bowl with little time to come together. If your goal was to just be a "hater" you accomplished it! Anyway, I went last week (Oct.4). My wife and I were greeted promptly and sat. The place is beautiful, unlike any sports bar I've ever seen. There are large TV's everywhere with great sports viewing. We ordered drinks, my wife had a margarita and I had there special 20 ounce draft beer of the month.....both were good. We ordered a uniques appetizer, Tuna rolls.....excellent!
My wife had an Asian Chicken Salad and I had the Spicy sausage pasta.....both were great. The server could have been more knowledgable and could have checked back sooner but in Pittsburgh, where I find service generally is slow, she did a good job. A manager came by to check on us. I brought up the comments here and he explained that the opening traffic counts were twice what they expected and it did overwhelm everyone however through continued training and hiring of people who have worked high-volume things had improved dramatically. I also asked about the comments concerning the 36oz steak, he explained that they get a boned-in steak because it has the most flavor, also it is 36 ounces prior to cooking (which is how every steak in the world is weighed), then people order it well done(what a waste)and complain! That is truly a lack of knowledge & experience on the person who ordered. He also explained that it is a very high-quality piece of meat that would be $60 or $70 in a steak house but is under $50 at Jerome's. As the manager said, "You can't always explain things to people who only want to complain!". He is correct. All I can say is my wife and I had a great experience at Grille 36. As an old restaurant guy I would encourage those of you who judged it harshly in the first weeks after opening to give it another try. Pittsburghers need to try to support growth not constantly try to find negatives. By the way...parking was very convenient and cheap!

After waiting for 2 hours with my wife and friends to get a table I was so disqusted with the fare and the service I was never so misled to a place as I was for Jeromes. I had the black and gold ravioli and my wife had the pasta reggiano my friend steve had pork chops and his wife a small steak, first my ravioli were cold and dry the sauce was supposed to be a lemon butter sauce but was more like lemon curd very disapointing. My wife had the chicken pasta reggiano pasta overcooked also the chicken the appearance reminded me of a high school cafeteria and also the taste, with over done chicken and un toasted garlic bread. Steve had the pork chops that were cooked to order but were lost in a bed of mashed potatoes and onion strips with a little asparagus thrown around the flavor was nothing special and appearance was terrible. While his wife had a small steak it was probably the best plate of all. The best thing that we had was the beer the mixed drinks have little to be desired as we found that we had to return a mudslide to the bar for no flavor no chocolate and no trace of alcohol. Thank god I was able to poke holes thru the wool over my eyes so I did not order desert. Never will I grace with my appearance or reccommend it to anyone not even an enemy. The wait staff did not take the returned drink off of our bill and when we told her to do so the system for ringing people out went down prolonging our agony 25 minutes longer. Very misleading, Jerome stay retired. And Fire your head chef for letting food like that pass your kitchen door.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to the much talked about Grill 36. I was more disappointed yesterday then when Jerome had the mysterious leg injury and injection for the playoffs. The wait staff was horrible and didnt even know the menu. When the entree came out it was so under cooked the waiter was embarassed and demanded to take it back to the kitchen. I dont know what they did with it back there, but I have been in the bathrooom ever since. And the whole time all I wanted was a glass of water and I am still waiting for that. Jerome should stick to writing books and broadcasting.

My Family and I went to experince grille 36 for ourselfs and we give it 36 thumbs up!! We arrived during the middle of a pre season game, there was a little bit of a wait, but to be expected they are sports restaurant. We were sat in the far dining room, that came with a wonderful view of Pittsburgh along the river. We were waited on right away. Our server Sara was the most entertaining waitress that my family has ever had! Her little voice and fun attitude had me and our family rouring the whole night!! Our food was amazing, I had the 36 oz steak and it was the best steak i have ever had. (and I am a steak eater.) I am so pleased with our day at jerome's grille 36 my family can not wait to go back.

What's with the winers? I've had lunch twice this summer and it was a great experience both times. The food was tasty, the atmosphere great outdoors and the waitresses very accommodating. Maybe the uniforms could be replaced.

My boyfriend and I have been waiting to come to grille 36 and this Friday we will finally get the chance. I hope my boyfriend loves the resturant as much as he loves Jerome... I'm almost certain he will. He went to his football camps when he was in high school and has pictures with him. He also got a jerome jersey signed. Unfortunately his Mom's house was robbed two years ago while he was away at school and the person got away with his signed jerome authentic jersey and his mom's check book. Though fortunately that person is locked away. But still no jersey back Anyways, a way from my tangent, We can't wait to come this friday for some fine dining and drinks. Enough with all of the rude comments, we will be the judge of Jerome's new place and if it is as classy as Jerome. I am sure we will love it!!! This little night away will take away from the hurt of getting his hero's jersey stolen, because now we get to get a real taste of what Jerome is all about!*~

Hey! I went there today with my family and was sort of not too into it. My family isn't the "Pittsburgh" family so they weren't really keen in the Steelers so I brought them there for the warm up. We were seated a little behind for no line, I guess lack of staff by a waitress who was not in waitress mood. She offered drinks, it took a little longer than expected. I was telling her about the family and no really being too understanding and to tell them about the restaurant and she put us on hold, and didn't come back until the food was ready and then left quickly again saying, "be back , be back. " We sort of blew it off and just sat there waiting for refills and service. We usually end up tipping well but we didn't really get what we wanted out of the trip. I say I will not bring my family, friends, or etc to this restaurant again due to this experience.
:( SORRY :(

So...I went back a second time with my boyfriend just to give it another try and it was as bad but you can tell who is having a good day and who is not. The food was alright, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack when I was done but I guess people go there for the greasy, greasy food. Anyways, that is my opinion who to the person who "works there" who obviously shouldnt because you have no manners, don't know how to take negative critizing and make it positive as well as your lack of intelligence, I guess that is what you expect from the people who work there that do not know how to entertain guests, work in a friendly enviroment and run a good shift because that is what is being expressed through Grille 36. I may be back again to express to the manager just how "great" his staff really isn't.

I think mr ed is a horse's behind :) That's just judging on his large vocab. and nothing else. Wilburrrrrrrrrrrrr

All of you people who write bad reviews saying that the food takes more than 20 minutes are fucking idiots. I worked there and know that the food has never taken more than 25 minutes to go out and thats pretty fucking good being that the restaurant seats 500 and there are only 7 cooks on the line on a busy night. The 36 ounce steak does indeed weigh 36 ounces and to prove it there are 6 of them in the case that they come in so if the box says it weighs 13.5 pounds then everyone who says they are 18 ounces are fucking idiots. Keep in mind that if you order one of these with the bone and not butterflied....they take 35 minutes to cook. It's a fucking 36 ounce steak you idiots. The mayo sits out like that because it sells so fast and they are brought out as soon a you are seated at your reserved table so you people don't know what the fuck you are talking about. The fuckin idiot who was complaining about the "water" leaking out of his "once frozen" portabella fritters doesn't realize that they were made fresh and never frozen or the fact that mushrooms that size retain a good amountof water. After all, they are mushrooms you fucking idiot. There are NO RESERVATIONS so you fucking idiots talking about never getting called back for your reservations are fuckin idiots too! Now remember all of you idiots out there I used to work there and I left for school and will be back and keep in touch and nothing has changed. And of course the spinach is washed, why the fuck wouldn't it be you cocksucking pussy? Anyways I have homework to do and just want to say that if you ate here and even think about saying that it took more than 20 minutes for your order, with the exception of the 36 ounce steak, you are a fucking idiot. Plain and simple, if you had a bad time at Grille 36, please, don;t come back, it's people like you that people in the restaurant business don't like, so please do us a favor and drive off the Fort Pitt bridge.

Went in for a few drinks tonight with my wife. We sat at the bar and had a better than pleasant time! The draft beer selection is phenomenal and the martinis are exquisite! Our bartender Tiffany was a pleasure among the riff raff of bartenders we have experienced in this city so far. She answered every question we threw at her and took the time to offer advice even though she was busy! For those micro beer connoisseurs out there, try the Mojo IPA. Absolute perfection for a hops enthusiast. My wife enjoyed her martinis and agreed that Grille 36 is our favorite place for cocktails in Pittsburgh!

We decided to go the grill before the Pirate game on Aug. 15. When we arrived, we gave one of the hostesses our name and she asked for a cell number. Said we would have around a 20 minute wait. It was about 20 minutes later when a call came through. So back into the Grill we go and the hostess wants to know "how many". We explained that they called us about our table. Couldn't find our name because another person had crossed it off. Getting a table was complete chaos. They need to change this system to the vibrators or something similar to ones used in other restaurants. You have to wait in the same line twice to get seated. Our waitress was sweet but it did take our food a while to arrive. Since we didn't want leftovers, we just had some appetizers that were very good though. Other than the experience with the table, it was an ok place.

Went to Grille 36 last night before a Pirates game.

The garlic mashed potatoes and the apple potatoes were excellant. The pasta primavera did have a unique twist. I must say, please watch the BBQ sauce guys, I like it on the chop not running off the plate, it was a little thin.

I have to agree with the comments already posted when it comes to the waitstaff uniforms. The gold tank tops are find, but please lose the the black tube top over it. The mens uniform were much more tasteful.

As for the two way mirrors in the restroom......you might want to rethink that idea. I know the baseball stadium is called PNC Park but do you really want to Pee and See?

The service was on okay. If you're that busy before a Pirate game what's it going to be like for a Steeler game. I do suggest you have more staff on hand to clean, reset table and bus more efficently.

Overall I did have pleasant time at Grille 36.

Fumble ! Went to Grill 36 last night 8/14/07. It will be our last visit. I'm afraid Mr Bettis has missed the bus. Can't comment on the food , because it never arrived. We waited 30 minutes in the bar for two warm beers. Was seated in the dining room and waited 45 minutes for our food. At one point the waiter said food will be up in two minutes. 15 minutes later...still waiting. found the "manager", who did not seem that concerned. Paid for our beers and left.

Posted by: jack | Aug 15, 2007 5:17:18 PM

I have been to Bettis Grille 36 twice now and will go again. GREAT FOOD AND FUN. I just had to comment on the Dish story, especially about getting the wrong beer delivered. "Mrs. Dish ordered a bottle of Yuengeling" Well, the beer is Yuengling, not Yuengeling, and, if you are are adding extra syllables, you just might not get what you ordered. ;O)

Me and my friends want a girls night out and thought that this would be the place to go but after reading the reviews I guess not

Sorry

Posted by: Ceil | Aug 9, 2007 12:20:31 PM

I went to eat there with my friends and the waitresses were rude, obnoxious, stupid, and basically needed to go back to school or training to learn how to talk to customers and how to treat them!

Posted by: Anonymous | Aug 7, 2007 8:03:09 PM

I love Bettis, I love the Steelers, I love the location of the restaurant, I love the decor. But, the food, service, and wait time were not worth it. HEY JEROME.....I Have a little neighborhood restaurant and would go under if we operated like your staff. Call me and I'll give you some advice!

Posted by: coco | Aug 4, 2007 10:37:16 PM

I have to say I enjoyed Grille 36 and have been raving about it to pals for weeks. I had a server just the other late-night whom I invited to join us because she was so friendly and sufficient. She declined, surely to maintain her job, but with a smile on her face. She was honest when she told me she had not yet tried the drink that I asked for her opinion on, but suggested others to me that I might enjoy. My Bruschetta was delicious and even though the kitchen is to close at 10 p.m., they made sure we were still served even though it was 10:01 (other places I've been to would kick you out just for asking).

It's too bad such a bad review was written when it may have only been one single server's fault. I think their only downfall is that they don't screen applicants proficiently. I certainly suggest it to anyone looking for a good meal, a delicious drink, and a fun atmosphere.
